BOOKMARK READING: IMPROVING CHILDREN’S LIFE CHANCES
Join volunteers helping children to read
Bookmark Reading is a charity that is helping children in Balham and Tooting develop their literacy skills.
This year, eight pupils in each class left primary school unable to read to the expected standard. Low literacy can greatly influence a child’s life chances and is more prevalent in children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Bookmark volunteers are helping young people, age 5 – 8, develop the skills they need, by working one-to-one with a child who is struggling to read at a local school. Volunteers lead two fun and creative 30-minute sessions a week with the same child for the duration of the 6 week programme. Reading sessions take place in the morning or midday and on our volunteer app you can search for opportunities within walking distance of your home or work and pick sessions at convenient times, making it possible to fit volunteering around other commitments.
