75th Anniversary of V2 rocket attack on Hazelhurst/Foss Road November 1944
Local history group Summerstown 182 invite everyone to their events to mark the 75th anniversary of one of Wandsworth’s most devastating Second World War incidents, the V2 rocket attack on Hazelhurst/Foss Road on 19th November 1944.
SATURDAY 16 NOVEMBER
2pm from St Mary’s Church, Summerstown
A Guided Walk through the Hazelhurst Estate including stories about the area and its people. We will visit the site where the bomb landed and neighbouring streets. We will visit the graves of some of the victims in Streatham Cemetery. We will also see some of the positive recent developments in the area, the work of ‘Work and Play Scrapstore’, daffodil planting to commemorate Peter Barr ‘The Daffodil King’ and the community engagement of AFC Wimbledon whose stadium development is rising fast nearby. The Walk will conclude with tea and coffee in St Mary’s Church where there will be a small exhibition of photos and local people’s memories.
TUESDAY 19 NOVEMBER
Commemoration Ceremony 12-12.30pm at Sutton Courtenay House, opposite Smallwood Primary School near the Green Plaque.
In collaboration with the School this will involve a few short speeches and recitals, a reading of the names of the victims and an Act of Commemoration. Afterwards there will be tea and coffee at St Mary’s Church.
Geoff Simmons, leader of Summerstown 182, writes:
“We hope very much some of you might be able to come along to one of these events. The story of that day and the ordeal of the families who suffered is well known locally and respected. Many of you passed on your precious memories to help tell it and for that we are forever grateful. We will do all we can to make sure it is never forgotten”.
