Responding to Covid 19 has been very demanding, but with massive effort from all concerned, Mushkil Aasaan has risen to the challenge. Their 100 care workers have kept services to clients flowing efficiently and compassionately, and morale is high.
It was nailbiting initially, Naseem explains, with at first no guidance from health authorities, then massive cascades of it without any coordination. They strive to keep both carers and clients safe, and fortunately have always managed to secure sufficient supplies of PPE. Fortunately too, there have only been two or three cases of coronavirus among clients, though sadly one client has died.
The office team and volunteers respond in other ways too. They provide a hot meals delivery service and shopping assistance in partnership with Balham mosque. This has been a lifeline for the isolated. Giving moral support is vital too, and Naseem and others spend a lot of time counselling those whose mental health has suffered. They work with Muslim members of the NHS chaplaincy service to provide support to those in hospital. Sadly too, they have had to respond to incidents of domestic violence, where their experience in providing support has been invaluable.
Though the building in Upper Tooting Road is closed, Mushkil Aasaan’s vital work continues. We hope it won’t be too long till it can open its doors again and the whole community can feel its embrace.Tel: 020 8672 6581
