The Scrapstore is open again!

A treasured resource for art and play

It’s great news that the Work and Play Scrapstore in Blackshaw Road reopened its doors in July, after a four-month closure due to the pandemic.

The Scrapstore is a  treasure trove of materials for creative recycling, including fabrics, paper, buttons, wallpaper, theatrical props, wood, perspex, paint, wool and more. The stock is donated by green minded businesses so it can be reused and waste avoided.

To access the Scrapstore and its collection, you need to be a member. For a modest annual subscription (lead-in memberships fees are £35 pa), members can visit as often as they like and collect materials for educational, artistic, play, creative, social or therapeutic activities. Scrapstore members are a mix of artists, nurseries, primary and secondary schools, charities, home educators, child minders and community groups.

Since re-opening Scrapstore has been open for collections on one day a week – Thursday – but for the month of September, it will open  a second day – Fridays. On both days there will be a limit of four members per hour.

Opening times are as follows, with a mix of pre-booked visits and drop-ins on offer:

11.00am – 1.40pm   Book online before you visit
2.30pm – 5.00pm     Drop in, no need to book
5.30pm – 7.00pm     Book online before you visit

11.00am – 1.40pm   Book online before you visit
2.30pm – 5.00pm     Drop in, no need to book

To make an online booking, up to 14 days ahead, please go to: www.workandplayscrapstore.org.uk

The store looks a little different, with a one-way system marked out, re-located reception desk, hand sanitiser posts, a requirement to wear masks plus the necessity of pre-booking online for a timed visit. All these changes are needed to limit numbers so that social distancing can be maintained and everyone kept safe.

Scrapstore hopes members will feel comfortable with these new arrangements and be happy to visit once again. As government guidelines ease over the coming months these arrangements will be revisited and any necessary changes made.

Many thanks to Scrapstore’s volunteers, who have worked incredibly hard to get this much-loved community resource up and running again.
