With COP26 now under way, the Scrapstore explains how it helps us move towards a greener, more climate friendly world through giving local people a store on their doorstep of recycled and repurposed materials for art, craft, play and community projects.
They stock a treasure trove of paper, sequins, paint, felt, card, trimmings, tissue, textiles, leather, widgets, perspex, bubble-wrap, wood, black-out fabric, props and much more. These are scrap and waste materials collected from green-minded businesses. Teachers, community organisations, students and others snap them up. The Scrapstore calculates that their store on the Hazelhurst Estate,Tooting, diverts over 62 tonnes of materials from landfill and incineration each year.
The Scrapstore educates the public on how to up-cycle and re-use waste materials through outreach work such as workshops and demos. These have included making puppets from milk bottles, making mobiles from milk bottle tops, doing origami from discarded paper and creating toys from waste,
Tuesdays 11am-8pm; Thursdays 11am-5pm.
